Skin Cancer Surgery FAQs

Is my skin cancer surgery covered by insurance?

Skin cancer surgery is often covered by health insurance but be sure to check with your provider to find out if you qualify.

What happens during the procedure?

The first step is that you may be administered anesthesia for your comfort during the procedure.

If it is a small area, then the doctor will perform an excision to remove the lesion from the skin and close the area in conjunction with the excision.

It might be that the skin cancer has spread beyond what is visible on the surface. If this is the case, your doctor will typically use frozen sections during the removal to find the whole area of affected skin.

A specialized technique, called Mohs surgery, uses multiple specially prepared frozen sections to look for an area where the skin cancer has not yet spread. Your doctor will reconstruct the area to cover the resulting wound.

If the area is large, skin grafting might be recommended.

What can I expect from recovery?

During your consultation, you doctor will discuss specific instructions to ensure that you are healing properly.
