There are two main techniques used when performing a rhinoplasty: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. After determining how you want to change the appearance of your nose, the doctor will choose the technique most fitting for the revisions needed.

Closed rhinoplasty procedures are performed when the patient is only concerned with the tip of the nose. Because this doesn’t require altering the bone anatomy of the entire nose, the doctor is able to only focus on the soft tissue within the tip. This results in fewer incisions and faster recovery.

Open rhinoplasty procedures are performed when the patient wishes to alter the entire size, shape, and width of the nose. This could mean straightening or slimming the bridge, evening a dorsal hump, altering the tip, or whatever else is needed to achieve the patient’s dream nose. This procedure requires more incisions than a closed rhinoplasty and affects a larger area, resulting in a longer recovery.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Initial recovery from a rhinoplasty takes about 4 to 6 weeks. This includes incisions, majority of swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Final results may take up to a year, as the residual swelling lingers and can distort the underlying revisions. Certain activities can cause inflammation and prolong recovery, which is why it’s important to listen to your body.
